Press Release

Another year begins for the German Non-Fiction Prize

Publishers may submit titles until 18 November 2022 / The city of Hamburg and ZEIT-Stiftung (ZEIT Foundation) are new partners / Award ceremony to be held in the Elbphilharmonie concert hall

The call for entries for the non-fiction book of the year is open: as of today, publishers can submit titles for the German Non-Fiction Prize 2023. An independent jury will select eight nominees, from which one book will be awarded the prize, worth 25,000 euros, on 1 June 2023.

The Deutsche Bank Stiftung (Deutsche Bank Foundation) remains main sponsor of the German Non-Fiction Prize. Furthermore, the Stiftung Buchkultur und Leseförderung des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels (Foundation for Book Culture and the Promotion of Reading of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association) welcomes two new partners, who are also supporting the award this year: the city of Hamburg and ZEIT-Stiftung (ZEIT Foundation). The award ceremony will take place on 1 June 2023 in the small concert hall in the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

Until 18 November 2022, publishers can register titles for the award. At anmeldung.deutscher-sachbuchpreis.de, publishers may submit two German-language monographs each from their current or planned programme and recommend up to five additional titles. These titles must be published between May 2022 and April 2023 and be available in bookstores no later than 18 April, when the nominations will be announced.

The German Non-Fiction Prize is awarded by the Stiftung Buchkultur und Leseförderung des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels for outstanding non-fiction books written in German that inspire social debate. The non-fiction book of the year is selected through a two-stage process. An independent jury, to be announced in November, will compile a list of nominations comprising eight titles, which will be published on 18 April 2023. From this selection, the members of the jury will choose the non-fiction book of the year. The eight authors will only find out which of them has won the German Non-Fiction Prize on the evening of the award ceremony itself. The winner will receive 25,000 euros, the seven other finalists 2,500 euros each.
